Dimension reduction for finite trees in l1

چکیده
We show that every n-point tree metric admits a (1 + ε)-embedding into ` C(ε) logn 1 , for every ε > 0, where C(ε) ≤ O ( ( 1ε ) 4 log 1ε ) ) . This matches the natural volume lower bound up to a factor depending only on ε. Previously, it was unknown whether even complete binary trees on n nodes could be embedded in ` O(logn) 1 with O(1) distortion. For complete d-ary trees, our construction achieves C(ε) ≤ O ( 1 ε2 ) .

Metric Structures in L1: Dimension, Snowflakes, and Average Distortion
We study the metric properties of finite subsets of L1. The analysis of such metrics is central to a number of important algorithmic problems involving the cut structure of weighted graphs, including the Sparsest Cut Problem, one of the most compelling open problems in the field of approximation algorithms. Additionally, many open questions in geometric non-linear functional analysis involve th...
متن کاملA lower bound on dimension reduction for trees in \ell_1
There is a constant c > 0 such that for every ε ∈ (0, 1) and n > 1/ε, the following holds. Any mapping from the n-point star metric into l1 with bi-Lipschitz distortion 1 + ε requires dimension d > c log n ε log(1/ε) .
متن کاملFinite Volume Spaces and Sparsification
We introduce and study finite d-volumes the high dimensional generalization of finite metric spaces. Having developed a suitable combinatorial machinery, we define l1-volumes and show that they contain Euclidean volumes and hypertree volumes. We show that they can approximate any d-volume with O(n) multiplicative distortion. On the other hand, contrary to Bourgain’s theorem for d = 1, there exi...
متن کاملComparison of Ordinal Response Modeling Methods like Decision Trees, Ordinal Forest and L1 Penalized Continuation Ratio Regression in High Dimensional Data
Background: Response variables in most medical and health-related research have an ordinal nature. Conventional modeling methods assume predictor variables to be independent, and consider a large number of samples (n) compared to the number of covariates (p). Therefore, it is not possible to use conventional models for high dimensional genetic data in which p > n. The present study compared th...
متن کاملThe production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition
This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...
